Why Therapy Does Not Bring About Unwanted Memory Loss

Amnesia Concept. Man Trying To Remember Something. Question Mark

There are many people who could benefit from counselling in west London to deal with ongoing mental health issues, past traumas and relationship problems. But sometimes people can be put off by inaccurate perceptions about what might be involved.

Among the more outspoken people regarding mental health has been Prince Harry, whose high-profile and often very controversial statements on various matters concerning his life and the Royal family are never out of the news. Love him or loathe him, he is never ignored.

His latest comments about receiving therapy for the traumas he has faced – chiefly the loss of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales when he was a child – emerged in an interview with trauma therapist Dr Gabor Mate. In it, Harry said he actually feared the therapy process could cause him to lose memories of his late mother

Evidently, given how much Harry has spoken of his mother in public and through his bombshell book Spare, this was not the case. He clearly remembers still her vividly. Many things can cause memory loss, but therapy is not one of them.

Whatever else one thinks of the prince, his life and the Royal family, this is an important consideration for anyone from any background; if you have had a trauma that may have involved losing a loved one, therapy can help you deal with the grief and its impacts without taking away the positive memories of that person.

Of course, the usual suspects are taking pot shots at the prince over his Gabor Mate interview, but the fact remains that for every high profile person whose every move and utterance is scrutinised, there will be millions who don’t have this but are still suffering with their own major internal battles.

If this is you, it is crucial to understand that therapy will never make things worse. It will not take away good memories. Instead, it will help you come to terms with bad ones and deal with them in a way that helps you live more freely going forward.
