If you are struggling with a mental health condition, your therapist, counselor, or primary care physician may suggest that you consult with a psychiatrist or a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) about the possibility of taking medication. Psychiatrists are doctors who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health problems, such as depression or anxiety. PMHNPs are nurses who have received supplementary training, making them specialists in psychiatric medications.

Both PMHNPs and Psychiatrists have the ability to prescribe and monitor the behavioral drugs used for mental health illnesses. They have considerable knowledge of the different medications available and the possible side effects. All psychiatrists and PMHNPs can prescribe medication and some also provide counseling. However, many people see both a therapist for the counseling and a psychiatrist or PMHNP for their medication management.
