Someone dies from suicide in the UK every 90 minutes, with three-quarters of deaths being men. A recent report has shown that most guys do not feel comfortable opening up about personal issues with their friends, which could explain why so many feel they have no other way out of their problems.
According to HUMEN, a men’s mental health charity, 85 per cent of males said they would not discuss their feelings when out with their mates, Yahoo! reported.
The study found 78 per cent knew they should speak to their friends more, but 37 per cent claimed they did not want to ‘bring the mood down’ and 48 per cent admitted they would not know how to help someone in need.
However, suicide is the biggest cause of death among men under the age of 50 in the UK, according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Former health and social care secretary Sajid Javid said: “We must treat suicides with the same urgency that we treat any other major killer.”
The government recently launched a ten-year plan, which it says will work through backlogs caused by the pandemic and improve mental health services across the country.
HUMEN recognised that currently the NHS only provides a short course of counselling unless the patient is at risk of suicide. Therefore, there are lots of men who are not receiving the support they need before they reach this point.
