As a person of mixed white heritage and having lived experience of growing up feeling different from the hosting culture, has given me insight into its effect and the impact it has on how we interact with the world. The internal dialogue we have with ourselves plays a part in our ability to fit in. It can be challenging in a world where we can feel 'out of place' or even 'harmed' by the difference we represent. I draw upon my Integrative-Intercultural practice to encourage an authentic communication between my client and myself. To be our true self with anyone else can be a challenge. In the 'to be me' space, I work creatively encouraging, through exploration of the client themselves, the removal of the mask that hides the difficulties the client feels and, through expression of the real experience, enable clients to become the authentic presence they long to be.
Integrative/Intercultural Therapist. Integrative therapy combines Psychodynamic and Person-Centred theories. Psychodynamics works with the past and its effect on the present-day functioning of a person's behaviour and responses to their everyday life. The Person-Centred approach is "to work with what the client brings to their session, and hear them from their frame of reference". To integrate the two is to enable the client to see the issues they raise clearly in a safe and holding space, whilst supporting them to look deeper into why they may respond in ways that they find difficult to cope with by exploring the past. Issues clients may encounter such as stress, anxiety, anger issues, low self-esteem, masking, communication, and relationship problems, and addiction, are to name but a few. How clients deal with their presenting problems is dependent upon their external and internal resources. The Intercultural approach enables the relationship between the client and therapist to look at all aspects of the presenting issues together. "We are our lives" the wholeness of ourselves includes our ethnic and family cultural background, and how these dynamics have caused patterns in how we function with our differences from each other. Working together we find the foundation of the clients functioning, and begin to enable the desired change to occur. Why we behave in the way we do is born out of life's journey. We are all Human Beings first and foremost. Difficult life experiences lead to us seek support to answer difficult internal questions. At times we just need a place, to be heard, for our lived experience, to be seen, our pain recognized, and to 'give ourselves permission to be authentic'. "To Be Me Therapy" is that space. We all come with issues of how we relate to the world, in which we have grown. Lived experience of difference has been the foundation of my practice. My Integrative, approach incorporates the Intercultural model of therapy as its foundation. Having worked extensively with people of various cultural backgrounds, I listen from the perspective of what is troubling my client, enabling an open environment for them to explore their issues. Working holistically, my intention is to create an environment to hold the whole of the person, offering a warm acceptance, to enable the integration and connection to the true self.
